Grain Silos

Individuals who are not in the agricultural industry sometimes underrate the importance of grain silos in the agricultural distribution chain. Without these silos grain cannot be harvested and stored until it's needed. Grain silos are storage units used in the agricultural industry to store grain or silage, which is animal feed. They are manufactured using a variety of materials including wood, concrete blocks, cast concrete and steel. These grain storage silos are designed in four distinct ways.

Tower silos, bunker silos, bag silos, and stave silos each are used for specific purposes. Tower silos are permanent silos often used by grain elevators to store grain for long periods. Grain storage silos, such as bunker and bag silos, are used by the agricultural industry to store silage or grain for livestock or for short periods during harvesting. Stave silos are used for long-term storage; but they are designed in a modular way allowing them to be moved around the farm as needed.

Tower Silos

Tower silos are usually made of concrete or steel and are the most common grain silo. They get their name because of their height, which can reach up to 275 feet and their tubular shape. Tower silos are designed with a series of doors or covers down one side to allow access into the tower's interior. They are popular for storing large amounts of grain, because they use gravity and the weight of the grain to naturally compact space within the silo to allow extra room for storage.

Bunker Silos

Bunker silos are an inexpensive way to store grain or silage. Bunker silos are really trenches in the ground, which are constructed by excavating a pit in the ground, creating a circular concrete block barrier wall, and filling it with a mound of grain. Once the bunker is filled with grain a weatherproof tarp is used to cover the mound.

Bag Silos

Bag silos are used to store grain in an inexpensive manor. Bag silos are constructed using large heavy plastic bags, which are packed with grain and sealed on both ends forming large bags. The bags are then stacked in a circular tower pattern for easy access.

Stave Silos

The most common stave silo is made of concrete, and constructed from interlocking concrete blocks. These blocks are designed with special groves to lock them into a tube like structure. The stave silo is then reinforced for strength using steel hoops to encircle the silo. Stave silos are popular because they are not permanent structures and allow farmers to move the silos as needed.

Silos play an important role in the agricultural industry. In major agricultural areas around the world, concrete silos collect grain for distribution by train, truck, or barge and are an essential part of preserving grain for the market.
