Typography may no longer be set by hand using metal type for traditional printing presses, but there is still an element of craftsmanship in graphic design. Every layout has been considered from a design viewpoint to a greater or lesser degree.

The Digital Revolution

Even though the Apple Mac, PC and desktop publishing has taken over, they are still only tools. It may be easy for your tennis club secretary to produce their own newsletter, but that doesn't make them a graphic designer.

A trained designer will have studied the traditional crafts of typography, photography, art and design. It's not about computer wizardry, but whether they can pick out a USP, have the 'eye', and the creativity. No amount of special effects will make up for a weak idea. Many still rough out concepts on a layout pad, before finishing them on the Mac.

Services Offered by Graphic Designers

Graphic design can cover all print media, including brochures, direct mail, fliers, newsletters, packaging and advertising along with brand development, logo design and corporate identity. Plus the electronic media, creating websites, Flash components, corporate blogs, and viral publicity.

Any designer or studio will have strengths in some areas, indeed some may specialise, but in the present climate, no-one's going to turn down work, even if it's not an area they've had much experience in. All the more reason to look through their design portfolio.

Choosing a Graphic Designer

Word of mouth referral is common, so talk to colleagues and see who they recommend. Look at designers' websites and when you find a few you like, call them in for a chat. At least you'll have an idea of whether you can work with them.

A Design Pitch from Graphic Designers

Getting several designers to pitch for your business is common. But bear in mind you're asking them to work for nothing.
 
Designers will be happy to discuss how they would tackle your brief, and show examples of previous work they've done, as a free service.  But if you want them to show mock-ups of the work they would create for you, bear in mind the time they will have spent producing this.

A rejection fee, for the designers you don't choose, does at least partly cover the costs involved. Otherwise, you'll need to make clear that this will be a speculative, free pitch.

Once you've chosen a designer, unless the work is large and ongoing, invoices are usually presented on a project-by-project basis. If you require the designer to supply and manage other services, like printing or media, the costs for that are usually covered by a mark-up on the agreed fee.

The Graphic Design Brief

Be clear about your aims. At the very least, take the time to produce a written brief. The tighter the brief, the less time will be wasted. We're talking about communication. Designers you can easily talk to, and who can accurately relay your brief to the people they work with - like copywriters, photographers, printers, web programmers - are the ones to choose.
