Point of Sale (POS) Systems

There are two basic types of point of sale systems on the market today. The first is geared toward the retail industry, from clothes shops to book stores, while the second is designed for the hospitality industry, serving restaurants, hotels and other establishments. The POS equipment you choose will depend largely on the type of business for which it is intended.

POS (point of sale) systems are a combination of hardware and software products that facilitate sales and inventory keeping. Some are extremely sophisticated and can be networked with other software programs to integrate all necessary tasks. Others are less expensive and provide only the nuts and bolts of point of sale transactions.

Retail vs. Hospitality POS Equipment

Retail point of sale equipment focuses on a single transaction between the business and the customer. These programs often offer functionality for things like sales and clearances, as well as keeping track of inventory. They print receipts and come with a barcode scanner to easily ring up customers' products.

Most current products are EPOS systems, which means they are electronically operated. You will also have to decide whether you want web-based point of sales equipment, which operates via the Internet, or software-based, which is installed on individual terminals.

Hospitality point of sale equipment, on the other hand, is in some ways more complex. Restaurants, for example, might need POS systems that can communicate from terminals on the floor to similar terminals in the kitchen, so that orders are electronically processed. For a hotel, these systems should be able to integrate room charges, room service, amenities and anything else that might eventually be added to a customer's bill.

Point of Sale Hardware

One of the most important things to consider when purchasing POS equipment is the hardware it requires to run effectively. Hardware might include a barcode scanner, several terminals, credit card readers and receipt printers.

It is also important to consider the POS experience from both the employee's and the customer's perspectives. For example, customers often appreciate a pole reader that displays their order totals at the register. It is a good idea to use cash drawers and security features that employees can learn and utilize easily.

Training, Maintenance & Repair of Point of Sale Systems

There will be times when your POS equipment malfunctions, which can be disastrous for both retail outlets and hospitality establishments. Your system might also require routine maintenance for maximum efficiency, and your employees will need to be trained on the system in the first place.

A simple, easy-to-learn POS system might be best for your business. There is less of a learning curve, which means fewer mistakes. However, this depends on the needs of your business, as well as the size and the types of products or services you offer.
