Access and Working Platforms

Access platforms and working platform equipment are used for a very wide range of tasks and as such come in an equally varied range of types, functions and sizes to meet all situations where people need to temporarily work safely at height.

The 2 basic types of access platforms are scissor lifts and boom lifts

Scissor Lifts: This type of access platform can usually only move directly up or down. The system uses linked, folding supports in a criss-cross pattern and the vertical motion is achieved by applying pressure to the outside of the lowest set of supports, straightening the crossing pattern inwards and upwards.

Boom Lifts:  Also known as articulated lifts, hydraulic platforms or Cherry Pickers, they are virtually all hydraulically powered and work in a similar way to a crane in that they are made up of jointed sections.  These sections can be extended, moving the lift in a number of different directions.

Both of these access platforms can be either self-propelling or moved into position on the back of a truck.

Choosing Access Platforms - what to consider

When considering the right access platform machinery for your needs it is critical to consider the following:

- What height does your access platform need to reach?

- What is the weight requirement for the access platform - ensure you don't exceed it!

- How many people need to be able to stand on the working platform at any one time?

- What type of ground will the access platform be used on - flat ground or rough terrain?

- What specific task will the access platform typically be used for?

- Do you want a self propelled access platform or one mounted on back of a vehicle?

- How long / often will you use it? It is often much more cost effective to choose access platform hire over buying one.

- Will access to the working environment be restricted and require a specific type of machine?

- Are you using indoors (in which case you'll usually need an electric access platform instead of diesel to ensure that are no build up of dangerous emissions)?

- Does you access platform need non-marking tyres etc?
