Whether you are excavating a site for a new shopping mall or tearing down an existing building, or preparing an area for a road or street, earthworks and earthwork machinery are a big part of the process. Groundwork is the process of preparing a parcel of land for development, which might require multiple groundwork contractors and a variety of different equipment.

What is an earthworks company?

There are two types of earthworks companies. The first sells or rents out earthworks equipment, such as cement mixers and coarse material washers, to other contractors who might need that type of machinery. The second type is a contracting company that conducts groundwork on behalf of a client.

These service providers are well-versed in earthworks and groundwork, and can provide answers to your questions as well as numerous solutions to whatever project you face. They are a significant ally when deciding how to proceed with a project, and often own expensive equipment that is not practical for many business owners to purchase themselves.

What services do earthworks companies provide?

Most earthworks contractors specialise in a specific area, such as topsoil stripping, which involves removing the top layer (one foot or more) of topsoil on a site after clearing and grubbing. They might also offer other services in addition to their specialties.

Bulk excavation is a common service that involves excavating a site and then moving the material to a recycle or resale centre. Cut and fill excavation, on the other hand, means cutting material out of a hillside or slope and using the material as fill. Some groundworks contractors lay foundations; install drainage systems; crush and mix concrete; offer water, log or sand washing; and provide numerous other services.

Some specialised groundworks contractors offer a range of services specific to a particular industry. For example, civil engineering groundworks companies provide civil engineers with the earthworks services necessary to build buildings, dams, bridges and other structures.

What machinery is needed for earthworks and groundwork?

Technology and advanced science have supplied us with infinite opportunities for earthworks and groundworks contractors to use a plethora of machinery to excavate, fill and otherwise service construction sites.

Hoppers are used to hold materials that have been excavated and to mete them out as needed by the earthworks contractor. Concrete plants mix concrete for various purposes, asphalt plants prepare and mix asphalt, and conveyors are used to move materials from one place to another.

There are also rock crushers, soil classifying equipment, pan feeders and jaw crushers. All of this equipment is used in specific applications, and much of it is very expensive. This is why many business owners hire groundworks contractors for renting equipment or completing projects.
