Timber

Timber is another term for lumber and refers to various types of wood that is used after felling. This generally refers to wood used as building materials or paper pulp. In some countries, such as the UK and Australia, timber refers to cut wood products or boards. However, in the US and Canada, timber refers to felled wood and the boards sold for construction are referred to as lumber. Timber may be used either as a rough or finished material and is sold in many different shapes and sizes.

Timber Types and Uses:

Finished timber generally comes in pre-determined sizes and is usually used in building and construction. This type of timber will come from mostly coniferous sources. The primary ones are softwoods, such as cedar, pine, fir, spruce and hemlock. Some hardwoods also are finished, such as those used in hardwood flooring.

Timber Sizing:

Some of the common sizes that timber or lumber is sold in include 2x6, 22x4, 2x8, 4x2, 4x4, 4x6, and more. Generally, standard lumber or timber is sold with a width of two or more inches (in even numbers) and a height of two to twenty-four feet (also in even numbers). However, because some building may require engineered lumber of greater lengths, these also are available from timber merchants. Lumber may also be purchased in the form of raw logs, plants and sleepers.

Timber Preservation:

Timber also may be vacuum or pressure treated to help prolong sustainability. Without treatment, timber can eventually rot or break down. Fungi, insect infestation, and weather damage are some of the main factors which can cause this to occur. In the preservation process, chemical preservatives are injected into the wood, usually with a combination of vacuum suction and pressure. Treated timber can last up to ten times as long as untreated timber.

Timber Merchants and Suppliers:

Timber merchants and suppliers are those who provide timber to third parties who then sell the lumber or timber to consumers. Some timber merchants will also be involved in the harvesting and preservation aspect of the timber business. However, some timber suppliers may specialise only in one aspect of the process, such as securing and then selling the acquired timber.
