Electronic Contract Manufacturing

Electronic contract manufacturing, also commonly known as ECM, occurs when one company hires another company on a contract to do electrical assembly work for them.  Companies that manufacture products that are sold to other companies and then marketed under a brand, known as OEM companies, often use electronic contract manufacturing to have components and parts created to put in the equipment that sell for branded sale by other companies.

Circuit boards are one example of electronic contract manufacturing. An OEM company that produces a piece of electronics or equipment might outsource the creation of the circuit boards to an electronic contract manufacturing company. Then the circuit boards are placed in their product, without a brand name of any kind, and their product is then sold to another company, without a brand name of any type. Then the product is sold under that final company's brand.

Even companies that aren't OEM manufacturers might hire electronic contract manufacturing companies to do detailed electronic work in their branded merchandise. The first company to do this was IBM in 1981. IBM, while making personal computers, began outsourcing things like motherboards and circuitry to electronic contact manufacturing companies.

Electronic Contract Manufacturing Service Companies

Some electronic contract manufacturing companies have grown large enough, that they're now considered EMS companies, or electronic manufacturing service companies, which offer more services than just electronic assembly and manufacturing.

Some of these companies have become independent manufacturing companies, creating electronics and devices for sale by discount chains under their own brand name or generic brand names. These companies are known as ODM companies, or original design manufacturers.

Choosing an Electronic Contract Manufacturing Company

When choosing an electronic contract manufacturing company, you should look at two important factors: whether your necessary component is an original design that the company must learn to create or whether it's a standard design that they're already familiar with, and whether or not the company is familiar with handling projects of the same scope and size as yours.

This is important whether your project is small in scope or very large. If an electronic contract manufacturing company is used to only handling huge volume and your needs are small, you might not get the individualised service that you want and expect for your project, but instead get a more bulk approach. If, on the other hand, the electronic contract manufacturing company is used to only small scale work, then they may not be able to adequately handle your large-scope project.

Look into the experience and credentials of the ECM to make sure they're experienced and qualified in creating the type of item that your company needs. And be sure the contract you agree to has clear terms about rate of production and supply, cost and quality. There should be very clear language as to how many units you'll receive how often, as well as guarantees of quality that go with those items.
