Boilers

Boilers are one of the easiest and most efficient ways to generate heat, whether to increase the temperature in a home or office during the winter, or to power machinery. Heating boilers have changed significantly over the years in terms of materials used and methods of generating heat, but the basic process is still the same.

Fuels for Boilers:

Many different types of fuel are used to power boilers, depending on the type of boiler and the application. Oil and natural gas are perhaps the most recognizable fuel types for boilers, but wood and coal have also been used extensively to generate power. You can find boilers on the market that are powered by electricity, but these are far less common and less efficient.

Oil boilers are common in areas of the country (and the world) where access to natural gas is limited. Wood boilers are an economical solution that uses renewable fuel rather than absorbing finite resources. Gas boilers, on the other hand, are a popular choice for homes and offices to provide a continuous supply of heated water with little toxic consequences.

Boiler Configurations:

Combination boilers (combi boilers) are condensing models that operate without a cylinder or tank in which to store the water. They are more energy efficient because unused water does not simply go to waste if it is not needed for the home, office or other application. They do, however, reduce water flow rate because they continuously draw water from the main line.

Water tube boilers are common in commercial and industrial settings because they have a maximum capacity of up to 300 million BTU per hour (versus 10 million BTU/h for standard cast iron sectional boilers). They can be fuelled by gas, coal or oil, and heat water-filled tubes with hot flue gases. Fire tube boilers are also popular in commercial applications.

Most heating boilers for residential and light commercial settings are tank-less, and a great deal are combi boilers. They save energy, take up less space, use fewer parts and there is less chance for water damage. However, there is a delay before hot water is supplied and they can provide insufficient pressure if the water flow rate is not high enough from the source.

Boiler Uses:

Boilers have been used throughout history for many purposes, from steam engines to home and office heating, to nuclear power plants. They can also be used to de-alkalise water and to de-aerate water.

Service and Maintenance:

It is important to schedule regular servicing and maintenance for boilers in a residential, commercial or industrial setting. Safety valves should be checked on a regular basis to ensure they are not clogged, and all pumps should be checked for obstruction and breakage.
